The difference between the 2- and 3-lane plans is what happens in between those intersections. The desire for drivers to turn needs to be balanced with the increased difficulty for pedestrians to cross in between the lights (something that is legal in Ontario under many circumstances, more reading here: http://spacing.ca/toronto/2007/11/20/pedestrians-crossing-mid-block-in-toronto-the-definitive-guide/ )

The major intersection issue solved, I would prefer a 2-lane solution in between, given that Uptown ought to be a pedestrian-oriented area. Traffic on King would quickly learn to avoid left turns onto side streets-- that is, if they haven't already. The same would go for vehicles coming out of the side streets and who might be tempted to use the middle lane as a merge lane. This in turn would keep pedestrians crossing side streets all the safer.
cdkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15582516106739781716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828111806827394610.post-10633361753798991962013-05-06T19:17:57.112-04:002013-05-06T19:17:57.112-04:00King St in uptown already effectively has one usab...King St in uptown already effectively has one usable lane going each way (especially if a bus is trying to pass by the parked cars), so I think losing some of the narrow lanes we got now would be good.

If I could pick, I'd go with one lane in each direction + a shared turn lane, since folks do frequently turn off onto Bridgeport or Erb, not to mention the smaller side streets.Anna Learhttp://annalear.canoreply@blogger.com
