Gates at crossings are n...Neat stuff overall but...<br />Gates at crossings are not a good idea. They jam things up and create crash hazards. It took the City of Kitchener just about forever to figure this out and thankfully the most dangerous example of these things that I know of was finally removed on the Iron Horse Trail. Since then, the trail has been much easier to use. Opening the gates along the rest of the trail has much eased the use of the trail. Since they are opened all winter for the snow plows with no problems, I see utterly no reason to close them come spring. Kitchener council apparently does not either at this time. So why, I wonder, is Waterloo considering putting them in in places where they are not needed now? Makes no sense. <br /><br />Now a bollard mid trail which is removable would be ok I suppose to keep cars out since it would not produce traffic jams of bicycles and pedestrians, but to be frank, I have never seen an automobile on the MUPS even once.
